Welcome to Travlinmad! I'm Lori - the photographer, writer, and founder here. I started a travel blog back in 2008BT (before technology) as a way for family to be able to reach us when we traveled, and today it has grown to include travel guides, itineraries, a searchable blog, and enough eye candy to ignite the spark for your own travel.

Having experienced travel on various budgets (though my backpacking days are over), I know the power that travel has to move us in the best possible way. Some of the most impactful experiences of my life were random and cost little to nothing - like rescuing and reuniting monkeys in captivity in Costa Rica to conversations with my host family in Peru (when we didn't even speak the same language). I don't travel to "collect" countries. I travel to connect with people - to see where they live, how they live, what they eat, and what's important to them - and also to set an example of good stewardship and responsible tourism. Having spent the past decade in destination marketing, I'm very mindful of tourism's double-edged sword. At the risk of sounding cliche, I value authenticity, and shy away from experiences manufactured specifically for tourism. Instead, I seek out the unique adventures that not only promote and protect the natural resources of a place, but also ensure a fair economic gain to the local community (the most valuable of those resources).

Experiential travel really is the new luxury!

I write about local food and cultural travel experiences that move you and help you find more meaningful adventures that immerse you for a little while but change you forever, so you'll want to do it again and again. Get lost in a new culture for a few days or weeks, understand how people live, eat local foods, share in local customs and celebrations, and give yourself a chance to be a part of a different way of life. You don't need to travel off the grid or spend a lot of money to find those one-of-a-kind experiences - you just need to open your heart, break down your self-imposed barriers to travel, and jump in!
